The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raymond D. Wilson (MCSN: 857269), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 9 May 1945. While his quad was advancing against strong hostile opposition, Sergeant Wilson succeeded in reaching three of his comrades who had been wounded as they gained the top of a ridge. Administering effective first aid while under intense enemy machine gun and mortar fire, he made three successive trips down the hill to carry the wounded men to safety, thereby saving their lives. His courage and grave concern for the safety of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
