The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Calvert T. Wilson (MCSN: 264792), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a squad leader in a platoon of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 28 February 1945. When his entire platoon became pinned down by intense enemy machine gun and small arms fire coming from a concealed position twenty-five yards to the front, Sergeant Wilson boldly reconnoitered the area to discover the hostile emplacement and heroically climbing out of his foxhole and waving for his men to follow, charged across the open terrain to succeed in killing two of the enemy while his comrades destroyed the remaining three. Mortally wounded by machine gun fire while leading this fierce assault. Sergeant Wilson, by his inspiring leadership, valiant fighting spirit and devotion to duty had enabled his platoon to continue its successful advance thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
