The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jacob P. Wiedrich (MCSN: 330832), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands on 1 August 1944. Although wounded by grenade fragments while leading his squad in an assault against hostile caves, Sergeant Wiedrich steadfastly refused evacuation and by courageously directing his unit in three successive assaults on the bitterly defended hostile caves, contributed materially to the capture of these enemy strong points. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
