The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Coyle H. Whitworth (MCSN: 0-27886), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the First Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Marianas Group on 20 June 1944. Leading his party through enemy mortar and small arms fire to a position two hundred yards ahead of the established line to observe the enemy, Second Lieutenant Whitworth fired numerous missions from this vantage point, thereby breaking up an enemy counter attack forming in the valley beyond and denying the enemy the approaches to his position. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Second Lieutenant Whitworth and the United States Naval Service.
