The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant John H. Lannon (ASN: 39001719), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 October 1944, in France. When the advance of his company was held up by enemy rifle and machinegun fire from well-entrenched positions, Sergeant Lannon made a personal reconnaissance of the area, thereby exposing himself to intense enemy fire. Having located three strategic enemy pill boxes, Sergeant Lannon expertly maneuvered his squad and directed its fire so as to neutralize two of the enemy strong points. Then, under full observation and intense fire from the enemy, he led his men forward to wipe out the remaining pill box. In the course of this action, he fell mortally wounded. Sergeant Lannon’s courageous leadership was immeasurably responsible for repelling an enemy threat and in saving many of his comrades’ lives. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
