(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Private Harvey M. Crandle, United States Army, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States as a member of an Engineer unit in New Guinea in 1942. Privates Julius S. Franklin, Harvey M. Crandle, and James Scott rescued the pilot of a fighter plane that crashed into a river. Gasoline ignited the plane and surrounding waters but the three men swam to the plane and pulled the pilot to safety.
