At only 4′ 11″ in height, Margaret Maloney was initially rejected by the army, but eventually was able to join with a waiver. The burns that she suffered in the heroic action that earned her the Soldier’s Medal required six weeks of surgery and recovery in the hospital.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Private Margaret H. Maloney, United States Army, was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in saving the live of Private Kenneth M. Jacobs on 11 September 1943 in Italy. Private Jacobs’ clothing caught fire from spilled gasoline while attending the kitchen stoves. Private Maloney beat the flames out with her bare hands and was hospitalized for six weeks.
