The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Nurse Corps) Christine C. Dahl, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 22d Field Hospital in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. While on leave from her post in Italy, she saw a Liberator bomber crash into an olive grove. All members of the crew were thrown from the plane except the nose turret gunner, who was pinned beneath the plane’s radio unit. Lieutenant Dahl crawled through a small hole in the fuselage to administer first aid to the gunner until he was freed three and one half hours later. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Second Lieutenant Dahl reflect great credit upon herself and the United States Army.
