The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Second Lieutenant (Nurse Corps) Margaret M. Decker, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States at Topaz, California, on 19 June 1943. On that date, while swimming in the Colorado River, without regard for her safety, Lieutenant Decker went to the rescue of a soldier and saved him from drowning. Though physically exhausted, she administered first aid to the soldier and accompanied him to a station hospital where he was given medical attention. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Second Lieutenant Decker reflect great credit upon herself and the United States Army.
