The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Nurse Corps) Marjorie S. Truax, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Nurse in Iceland in 1942. The Operating Room was shelled right after an operation had been finished. The doctor was knocked unconscious, and the steam sterilizer was hit, sending steam jets out into the room. Nurse Truax pushed two enlisted men out of the reach of the steam, dragged out the doctor, removed the patient from the table to a safe spot, and collapsed. Her gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for her own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon herself and the United States Army.
