(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Robert Jack Haase (ASN: 0-434591), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Bombardier of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the 93d Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations. On 9 August 1942 during a bombing mission over Rabaul. Lieutenant Haase’s bomber developed engine trouble and was force to crash-land on a coral reef. During the landing he courageously manned his gun and kept the enemy at bay. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Haase, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
