The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Staff Sergeant John T. Montgomery (ASN: 37204453), United States Army, for extraordinary achievement against an enemy of the United States in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, from 6 June 1944 to 16 March 1945. Sergeant Montgomery landed on a Normandy Beach on 6 June 1944 at which time, and during many significant engagements thereafter, he rendered outstanding service as squad leader of 1st platoon, Company K. During the Cherbourg campaign he formed a body of men from untrained and untried replacements and repeatedly attacked the enemy giving him no rest and no time to reform his lines. Although twice wounded he refused to be relieved until an officer could be found to carry on his job. Sergeant Montgomery’s exemplary record of service reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

Montgomery (ASN: 37204453), United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
