The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Michael D. Valadez (ASN: 0-5425075), United States Army, for heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Valdez distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 12 March 1968 while serving as a forward observer attacked to Company A, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained several casualties, Lieutenant Valadez exposed himself to the hostile fire in order to direct and adjust accurate artillery fire against the insurgents’ emplacements, enabling his unit to evacuate their wounded to safety and set up more favorable defensive positions. His actions contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Lieutenant Valadez’s display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
