The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Randall Laverne Fuller (ASN: RA-12690374), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company E, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 3d Brigade (Separate), 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Fuller distinguished himself on 19 February 1971 while serving as platoon sergeant on a reconnaissance mission in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, his platoon was confronted with a heavy enemy attack from claymore mines and small arms fire. The initial blast and shock completely disorganized the platoon, killing one member and seriously wounding Staff Sergeant Fuller and two others. Although suffering multiple injuries, Staff Sergeant Fuller continued his mission by shouting words of encouragement to his men in order to rally and reorganize them for the ensuing battle. through a valiant display of leadership ability on his part, the initial attack was stifled. Although badly wounded, he not once relinquished control of his men and the situation at hand. He continued to inspire and lead the platoon until the attack was completely repelled, and the area secured to allow for treatment of the wounded. His actions were the sole reason that the platoon’s casualties were minimized. Staff Sergeant Fuller’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
