Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7385 (October 18, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Michael Leo Nathe (ASN: 0-111765), United States Army, for gallantry in action. First Lieutenant Nathe distinguished himself by heroic actions on 29 August 1968, while serving as a platoon leader with Company B, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. While set up in their night defensive position, Company B came under an intense enemy attack. Lieutenant Nathe, who was under heavy fire himself, was one of the first wounded by the incoming rounds. He was offered medical attention but refused. With complete disregard for his own safety, he maneuvered from position to position giving aid to other wounded men and evacuating them to a safety position. At this time, Lieutenant Nathe moved from bunker to bunker directing return fire on the attacking enemy force. While moving to a machine gun position he was mortally wounded by an enemy mortar round. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the enemy force. Lieutenant Nathe’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
