The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James R. Wall, Jr. (ASN: 0-324339), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 415th Infantry Regiment, 104th Infantry Division, in action in Germany on 25 February 1945. His company was employed in trying to rescue scattered elements of Company K, who had been repelling a counter attack against superior enemy forces. At this point, with our troops beset with forces estimated at 5 tanks and 300 infantrymen supporting, Captain Wall personally took up a bazooka, and with an enlisted man carrying the bazooka ammunition, went forward alternately using smoke and high-explosive shells drove back two tanks with supporting ground troops. In so doing Captain Wall recovered 24 men of Company K from the enemy. The undaunted courage and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Wall are in keeping with the finest traditions of the American combat soldier, reflecting distinct credit on this officer and the military service.
