Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 408 (September 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Homer L. Dozier (ASN: 34876009), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States on 29 July 1945 in Ulm, Germany. While sitting on the bank of the Danube River with three of his comrades, watching a group of children swimming, Private First Class Dozier noticed a small boy being carried downstream by the swift current. Without a moment’s hesitation, Private First Class Dozier, fully clothed, dove into the river and swam to the aid of the boy. Fighting the treacherous current, in spite of the added weight of the unconscious child and his own wet clothing, he reached the shore and immediately began to administer artificial respiration. By his quick thinking and brave action, he revived the young boy and saved him from death by drowning.
