The Secretary of the Army of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Army Commendation Medal with Combat “V” to Captain Paul M. Dyer, United States Army, for valorous actions as an Afghan National Army Combat Advisor with the Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 27 July 2008. Captain Dyer, without regard for his own safety, moved a severely wounded Afghan National Army Soldier through direct enemy fire from a heavy machine gun, small arms and air-burst rocket propelled grenade fire. Captain Dyer used his own body to shield his patient from flanking enemy fire. While withdrawing with the casualty, he adjusted coalition artillery fire until the attack was repelled, killing eight enemy insurgents and destroying the heavy machine gun. His heroic actions reflect great credit upon himself, The Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan, The United States Central Command, and The United States Army.
