The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Air Corps) George C. Deaton (ASN: 0-388655), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane in the XII Air Support Command, TWELFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations during the period from 4 January to 17 April 1943. Since the time he assumed command of his Squadron, Major Deaton, by his keen professional knowledge of fighter tactics and personal example, has been an inspiration of the personnel of his Squadron. In the period from 4 January 1943 to 17 April 1943, Major Deaton participated in practically all the missions flown by his Squadron and contributed in no small measure to the many exceptional victories accredited to his command, being directly responsible for considerable damage to the enemy. Through his observation and evaluation of fighter tactics he rendered invaluable help to the pilots of his Group. By his courage in service of an especially hazardous nature, Major Deaton has served the Armed Forces of his country gallantly and well, and has exemplified the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
