The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Staff Sergeant Roy D. Bryan (ASN: RA-18752745), United States Army, for heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Bryan distinguished himself while serving as a Track Commander with the 2d Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 13 November 1967, a platoon patrol, of which Sergeant Bryan was a member, came under heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire. Upon initial contact, one of Sergeant Bryan’s squad members was seriously wounded. Under intense fire, without regard for his own safety, he dashed to the wounded soldier and immediately began administering first aid. He then manned the wounded soldier’s machine gun and began directing a high rate of effective fire against the enemy. This enabled his platoon to maneuver into better strategic positions and permitted the wounded to be safely evacuated. As a result of his dauntless courage many lives were undoubtedly saved, and his brave actions contributed greatly to the success of the platoon’s mission. Staff Sergeant Bryan’s personal bravery and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
