The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Armor) Richard A. Paul (ASN: 0-1339912), United States Army, for heroic achievement as a member of Tank Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action on 21 and 22 September 1952 in the vicinity of Sangpo-bang, North Korea. On those dates, Lieutenant Paul was directing the fire of his tank platoon in the support of friendly units retaking the shell-torn slopes of Hill 266, better known as “Old Baldy”. As the Infantry units assaulted the hill, they came under heavy fire from enemy mortar, artillery, and automatic weapons, which inflicted numerous casualties upon them. Spotting three wounded men lying in the open, Lieutenant Paul, with complete disregard for personal safety, fearlessly left the shelter of his tank and, scorning the hail of hostile fire, ran to their aid. With the assistance of a comrade he then carried them to the protection of the tank. After giving first aid to the wounded he then left the tank again in aid in evacuating more wounded. He made repeated trips through the curtain of fire, not resting until assured that all wounded in the vicinity had been evacuated. The bravery under fire and consummate devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Paul was responsible for the saving of many lives and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
