The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman Thomas A. Crosley, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on the F-106 Aircraft Maintenance Branch Flight Line, Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, on 27 February 1980. On that date, he did, with extraordinary reflexes, split-second timing and without regard for his own safety, fight desperately to save an F-106. Airman Crosley, while performing assigned duties as an Aerospace Vehicle Crew Chief, heard an explosion and saw flames shooting out of an F-106. Airman Crosley unhesitatingly rushed to get a fire extinguisher with which to fight the fire and to assist the aircrew in their ground egress. The seat pack for one of the members would not release and Airman Crosley physically carried him away from the aircraft and then released the seat pack. He then returned to try to suppress the fire and save the aircraft. Although supervisors directed Airman Crosley to abandon his efforts, he continued to fight the fire until forcibly removed from the area which was immediately engulfed by flames. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Crosley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
