James Young was commissioned in the U.S. Army through the Officer Candidate School in 1946, serving as an Infantry Officer until 1950 when he transferred to the U.S. Air Force. As a Fighter Pilot he flew combat missions in the Korean War, and flew combat a second time in the Vietnam War. He retired in 1979 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
