David Young graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. He was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Southern California in 1977, and was commissioned captain in the Air Force later that year. He retired in 2008 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
