The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Sergeant Thurman K. Woodlief (ASN: RA-6968851), United States Army, for heroism while a member of Headquarters Battery, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, on 27 September 1950 in the vicinity of Hyopchon, Korea, On this date, an ammunition truck, one of a convoy in which Sergeant Woodlief was riding, slid off the road and overturned. Several infantrymen who had been riding on the truck were pinned underneath the ammunition and were in danger of being crushed by the truck. With complete disregard for his personal safety, and despite the fire hazard caused by dripping gasoline, he crawled underneath the truck and pulled out some of the ammunition, which made it possible for the trapped men to be removed. The heroic efforts of Sergeant Woodlief on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
