The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John J. Whalen, Jr. (MCSN: 325107), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during an attack against enemy Japanese forces in Cape Gloucester Area, New Britain on January 24, 1944. Bravely intent on helping a wounded comrade who lay exposed to hostile fire, Private Whalen unhesitatingly risked his life by swimming across a stream and crawling over a sand pit to attempt a rescue. L Failing to accomplish his mission despite the most heroic efforts Private Whalen remained with his companion until the Japanese machine guns were silenced four hours later. His valiant action on behalf of another was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
