After serving as a Medical Officer in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he left the service briefly after the war for a private medical practice in Wyoming, where he became a member of the Wyoming Air National Guard. He returned to active duty in 1948, and retired in 1973 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
