The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert J. Wells (MCSN: 446554), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Scout with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, Fifth Marines Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 8 March 1945. When his company’s advance was held up by heavy mortar fire, Corporal Wells advanced beyond the front lines to reconnoiter the enemy position and after locating a strongly fortified mortar position returned to his own lines with this information. Although wounded by hostile sniper fire, he led a demolitions squad forward and directed the destruction of the enemy emplacement, bringing his men back to their lines without casualties. His courage, initiative and outstanding leadership greatly aided his company in continuing the advance and reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Wells and the United States Naval Service.
