The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James D. Welky (MCSN: 334209), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, III Amphibious Corps during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 28 July 1944. After the Squad Leader and Assistant Squad Leader were wounded, Private First Class Welky reorganized his men and moved them into position, Heedless of danger; he secured aid for the wounded and assisted in their evacuation. By his presence of mind and quick action, he was materially responsible for avoiding further casualties in his squad and for maintaining the squad’s position in the company line. His aggressive fighting spirit and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Welky and the United States Naval Service.
