Jonathan Treacy was commissioned in the Marine Corps through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1980 upon graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and served as a pilot in a Marine Fighter Attack Squadron in combat operations off the coast of Libya in 1986. In 1988 he joined the Massachusetts Air National Guard. In 2007 he was appointed a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General, and in 2010 he received his second star as a Major General.
