Thomas Travis was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1976 upon graduation from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. completed his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine, where he was the top Air Force graduate, and in 1987 he became a flight surgeon. From 2012 to 2015 he served as the 21st Surgeon General of the Air Force and retired in 2015 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General.
