Alonzo Towner received his doctor of medicine degree and engaged in a private medical practice in Idaho before entering military service in 1940. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. From 1970 to 1972 he served as the 7th Surgeon General of the Air Force, and retired in 1972 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General.
