Robert Thompson attended Virginia Military Institute and then earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Texas School of Dentistry. After three years of private practice, he entered on active military duty in May 1949 as a dental officer. He retired in 1979 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
