The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant William B. Wehrli (MCSN: 0-32505), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader with an Assault Company attached to the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands on 18 September 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Second Lieutenant Wehrli rendered valiant service by leading his assault platoon in support of tanks crossing an enemy held airfield. Disregarding his own personal safety when numerous casualties inflicted by enemy artillery and machine gun fire threatened to disorganize the attack, he walked up and down the line, encouraging his men as he gave instructions and directed their fire. Although killed by hostile fire during this action, Second Lieutenant Wehrli had undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades and had prevented the disorganization of the attack, thereby contributing materially to the ultimate success of a vital campaign pointing toward further victories over the Japanese. His outstanding leadership and daring initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
