The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William J. Wehner (MCSN: 366574), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving in a Machine Gun Section of the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 21 July 1944. When one gun on the right flank was knocked out, the gun crew killed or wounded and the position overrun by the Japanese during a fire fight, Sergeant Wehner left his position to recover the gun and aid the wounded men. Braving heavy enemy fire, he brought the gun back and put it in action again. His initiative and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Wehner and the United States Naval Service.
