The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harry C. Wedell, Jr. (MCSN: 876464), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against the enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, on 18 June 1944. Fearlessly braving heavy enemy fire, Private First Class Wedell went forward of our lines and dragged a wounded comrade to a covered position where he administered first aid. Later, he went to the assistance of his commanding officer who was ambushed and subjected to close range fire by an enemy rifleman. Without hesitation, he pushed his commanding officer out of danger with one hand and, firing his weapon with the other, killed the enemy. His indomitable spirit, self-sacrificing efforts and courage in the face of danger reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Wedell and the United States Naval Service.
