John Stokes was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1985 upon graduation from Utah State University. In 2014 he was appointed a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General, and in 2016 he received his second star as a Major General.

Stokes, United States Air Force, was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Mobilization Assistant to the Commander, Air Force Special Operations Command; and subsequently as Director of Operations, Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field, Florida, from 2015 to 2016. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Stokes and his dedicated contributions in the service of his country reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
