The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arnold L. Weber (MCSN: 938824), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Company E, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 14 June 1945. When his squad leader was wounded and the gunner was absent from his machine gun during night attack on Kunishi Ridge, Private First Class Weber kept the machine gun in action, refusing to be evacuated although suffering from concussion caused by enemy hand grenades. Remaining at his post even after the return of the gunner he skillfully carried out his duties as assistant gunner and, despite the use of only one arm, rendered invaluable assistance in repelling the enemy attack. His courageous and unswerving devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
