Stapleton, United States Air Force, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving as an F-111 Aircraft Commander and Chief, Standardization and Evaluation Division, 432d Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action against the enemy over Southeast Asia from 1970 to 1971. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Air Force.
Under the provisions of Department of Defense 1348.33-M, the Secretary of Defense has awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal to Major General Joseph K.
