The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert L. Webb (MCSN: 358013), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Runner of Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 6 March 1945. When his platoon’s advance was being held up by a large number of enemy troops throwing hand grenades from an entrenchment, Corporal Webb ran forward through an intense hostile barrage, spraying the enemy position with automatic fire from his sub-machine gun and calling for his platoon to close with the enemy. By his courageous action, he encouraged his comrades to annihilate the enemy and to advance to the objective. His aggressive spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
