The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Luther H. Webb (MCSN: 407478), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 20 March 1945. Upon learning the location of several casualties, Private First Class Webb placed his squad in the hands of the second in command and, dashing through a lane of fire, administered first aid to one seriously wounded man and returned to his platoon for a litter with which to drag the Marine to safety. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Webb and the United States Naval Service.
