Larry Smith received his bachelor of arts degree in 1935 and his bachelor of science in 1936 from the University of North Dakota. He received his bachelor of medicine degree from the medical school of Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, in 1938. After serving as a Medical Officer in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1973 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
