Jack Sheppard was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1955 upon graduation from the University of Akron. He retired in 1988 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

Sheppard, United States Air Force, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as an AC-47 Pilot with the 1st Air Commando Squadron, and later the 4th Air Commando Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, in action against the enemy during 302 combat missions over Southeast Asia from 1965 to 1966. His devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
