The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant George S. Weaber (MCSN: 0-2372), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Fourth Joint Assault Signal Company, Fleet Marine Force, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Peleliu, Palau Islands on 27 September 1944. While leading his men back to the command post through enemy infested territory after completing a successful fire mission from the forward observation post, Second Lieutenant Weaber immediately retracted when the rear elements of his platoon were suddenly pinned down by a vicious hostile attack. Concerned only for the safety of his men, he climbed through withering enemy machine gun and rifle fire to an advantageous position for covering their withdrawal and while performing his hazardous task was fatally struck down by a burst of hostile shell fire. By his outstanding fortitude, great personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts, Second Lieutenant Weaber contributed to the saving of many lives and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
