Stephen Shapiro was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1956 upon graduation from Brooklyn College. He performed his medical training at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, and received a doctor of medicine degree, magna cum laude, in 1960. He retired in 1992 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
