John Shanahan was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1984 upon graduation from the University of Michigan. In 2009 he was appointed a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General. In 2012 he received his second star, and in 2015 he received his third star as a Lieutenant General.
