Josef Schmid was commissioned as a Medical Officer in the Air Force after graduating from Belmont Abbey College in 1988. In 2013 he was appointed a U.S. Air Force Reserve Brigadier General. In his civilian capacity, he is a NASA flight surgeon at the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.
