George Schafer was commissioned as a Medical Officer in the Air Force in 1947 after completing internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and three months of surgical residency. From 1975 to 1978 he served as the 9th Surgeon General of the Air Force, and retired in 1978 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General.
