James Sanders entered active duty by direct appointment in July 1958. The general attended the basic orientation course for medical officers at Gunter Air Force Station, Alabama, and later the primary course in aviation medicine at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. He retired in 1991 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
