After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Robert Rushworth transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He is rated a command pilot astronaut and has more than 6,500 flying hours in more than 50 different aircraft. He retired in 1981 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
